At the helm of our Breaking and Pre-Training operation is well-respected Horseman Ernie Rika. Ernie is excited about the future, which allows him to take a leadership role with the assistance of Kelly. He works alongside her at Prima Park and has the use of the brand-new facilities, ensuring a safe and happy environment for horses being educated.

Ernie’s involvement with horses came at a young age, helping his uncle break in horses during the school holidays. It was from there that his passion for horses grew, and at the young age of 14, he went on to compete successfully on the National Rodeo circuit, riding in the open bull ride throughout New Zealand every summer. It was during his time on the rodeo circuit that Ernie was introduced to the well-respected top horseman Paul Pertab in 2012. It was Paul who gave Ernie his introduction to the racing industry, and he went on to work for Paul and his brother Steve for several years. Throughout his career, Ernie has worked for some of the country’s leading trainers and stables, gaining valuable experience from each one. This allowed him to see all the different facets of the industry and develop his own skillset and methods that he uses today. Eventually, Ernie joined Daniel Miller Racing, where he played a key role in the breaking and education of young horses in Daniel’s business.

In November 2022, the Miller team joined Prima Park.

Ernie is a passionate and dedicated young man who is gifted in the education of horses—a job he loves. It did not take long for Kelly to recognize Ernie’s talent and expertise. “Ernie has an incredible way with the young horses. His wonderful calm approach helps each horse respond to him very quickly. We have been very impressed with Ernie’s commitment and dedication and the skillset he possesses.” Kelly had no hesitation in quickly promoting Ernie to Head Breaker and Pre-Trainer. An outstanding rider with an empathic approach to his riding, horses do very well under Ernie’s care. It has been very satisfying to see the progress of the horses and see them developed into highly educated individuals. We are very proud of our hardworking team here at Prima Park. We pride ourselves on horses going on to be successful in their racing careers.
